Unhelpful beliefs about sleep have been widely recognised as important in the development and maintenance of insomnia.
Five broad classes of unhelpful beliefs about sleep are: misconceptions about the causes of insomnia, misattributions or amplifications of the consequences of insomnia, unrealistic sleep expectations, diminished perception of control over sleep, and faulty beliefs about sleep promoting practices.
A safety behaviour is an overt or covert strategy employed in order to prevent a feared outcome from occurring. These behaviours can, however, prevent the disconfirmation of unhelpful beliefs, and may make the feared outcome more likely to occur.
Interestingly, most safety behaviours were associated with impairment in both sleep and daytime functioning.
