The RQ is based on the four-category model of adult attachment, which extends the Secure–Insecure distinction by incorporating two underlying dimensions: the Model of Self (attachment-related anxiety) and the Model of Other (attachment-related avoidance).
The instrument yields four attachment prototypes:
A. Secure Attachment. Positive Model of Self, Positive Model of Other.
Characterized by comfort with intimacy and autonomy, and a balanced view of relationships.
B. Fearful Attachment. Negative Model of Self, Negative Model of Other.
Characterized by desire for closeness combined with distrust and fear of rejection, often resulting in avoidance of intimacy.
C. Preoccupied Attachment. Negative Model of Self, Positive Model of Other.
Characterized by dependence on others' approval, fear of rejection, and heightened relational concern.
D. Dismissing Attachment. Positive Model of Self, Negative Model of Other.
Characterized by emotional independence, discomfort with closeness, and a tendency to downplay the importance of close relationships.
