Intolerance to Uncertainty: concept and assessment

Uncertainty-related assessment focuses on how people perceive, tolerate, and respond to uncertain, ambiguous, unpredictable, or uncontrollable situations. These responses may include worry, threat anticipation, avoidance, reassurance seeking, attempts to regain control, or, conversely, acceptance, flexibility, and effective action without full certainty.

Intolerance of uncertainty was originally studied in the context of anxiety disorders, especially generalized anxiety, but it is now considered a broader transdiagnostic factor. Related constructs include tolerance of ambiguity, acceptance of uncontrollability, and adaptive functioning under uncertainty or risk.

Core measures of intolerance of uncertainty

Core measures focus on the tendency to perceive uncertainty as threatening, stressful, or unacceptable. They are especially relevant to worry, anxiety, reassurance seeking, avoidance, and attempts to regain certainty.

The Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS, IUS-12, IUS-C) is the most widely used measure of the construct. It assesses cognitive, emotional, and behavioral reactions to uncertain situations, including the tendency to experience uncertainty as distressing, unfair, or unacceptable.

The Intolerance of Uncertainty Inventory (IUI, IUI-15) provides a more differentiated assessment of intolerance of uncertainty. It includes general beliefs about the unacceptability of uncertainty and specific reactions such as avoidance, doubt, threat overestimation, worry, control efforts, and reassurance seeking.

Responses, tolerance, and acceptance of uncertainty

These measures describe broader ways of responding to uncertain or uncontrollable situations, including avoidance, control efforts, acceptance, flexibility, and the ability to function without full certainty.

The Uncertainty Response Scale (URS) assesses emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to uncertainty, including discomfort, engagement with uncertain information, and orientation toward change.

The Tolerance of Uncontrollability Questionnaire (TOUQ) assesses the ability to accept that not all aspects of life can be controlled. This construct is related to intolerance of uncertainty but emphasizes acceptance of uncontrollability rather than fear of ambiguity.

The Uncertainty Tolerance Scale (UTS) assesses the extent to which individuals can remain comfortable and function effectively in uncertain situations.

Ambiguity tolerance

Ambiguity tolerance is closely related to intolerance of uncertainty, but focuses more on reactions to vague, complex, unfamiliar, contradictory, or open-ended situations. It is often studied in relation to cognitive style, openness to complexity, decision-making, and adaptation to unclear or conflicting information.

The Intolerance of Ambiguity Scale (IAS) assesses discomfort with ambiguous situations and preference for clarity, structure, and definite answers.

The Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale (MSTAT-I, MSTAT-II) assesses attitudes toward ambiguous stimuli and situations across different contexts.

The Measurement of Ambiguity Tolerance (MAT-50) assesses tolerance for ambiguous, uncertain, complex, or insoluble situations and stimuli.

The Short Ambiguity Intolerance Scale (SAIS-7) assesses discomfort with ambiguous, uncertain, or insufficiently defined situations, reflecting a preference for clarity, predictability, and unambiguous information.

Adaptive functioning under uncertainty and risk

Some instruments assess the ability to remain effective in uncertain or risky contexts rather than distress about uncertainty itself.

The Subjective Risk Intelligence Scale (SRIS) captures the ability to deal effectively with uncertainty and risk. It includes dimensions such as imaginative capability, problem-solving self-efficacy, positive attitude toward uncertainty, and emotional stress vulnerability.

Related domains

Anxiety. Intolerance of uncertainty is closely linked to worry, threat monitoring, reassurance seeking, avoidance, and generalized anxiety.

Control and flexibility. When uncertainty is experienced as intolerable, people may try to regain control through checking, planning, reassurance seeking, or avoidance.

Cognitive-behavioral models of anxiety emphasize uncertainty, threat appraisal, catastrophic interpretations, avoidance, and safety behaviors.

Cognitive traits. Ambiguity tolerance is related to cognitive style, openness to complexity, decision-making, and responses to vague or contradictory information.

Integration and interpretation

Uncertainty-related instruments should be interpreted as a set of related but distinct approaches. Core intolerance measures focus on uncertainty as threatening or unacceptable; ambiguity-tolerance measures describe responses to vague, complex, or contradictory information; and adaptive-functioning measures assess the ability to remain flexible and effective when outcomes are unclear.

These constructs are especially relevant to anxiety, worry, avoidance, control efforts, decision-making, and adaptation to complexity. A profile-based interpretation should therefore consider whether uncertainty is experienced mainly as threat, ambiguity, lack of control, cognitive complexity, or an ordinary condition for action.
