The Eysenck model is one of the earliest biologically oriented trait theories of personality. Developed by Hans J. Eysenck in the mid-20th century, it describes personality through a small number of broad, biologically grounded dimensions.
The model originally included two core traits – Extraversion and Neuroticism – and was later expanded with Psychoticism. These traits were interpreted as reflecting neurophysiological systems related to arousal, emotional reactivity, and behavioral regulation.
Personality in this framework is understood dimensionally: individuals differ in the degree to which they exhibit each trait, rather than belonging to discrete types.
• Extraversion reflects sociability, activity, and responsiveness to stimulation. It is theoretically linked to cortical arousal, with extraverts characterized by lower baseline arousal and greater stimulation seeking.
• Neuroticism refers to emotional instability and sensitivity to stress. It is associated with heightened emotional reactivity, anxiety, mood fluctuations, and negative affect.
• Psychoticism captures traits related to aggressiveness, impulsivity, low empathy, and nonconformity. Despite the name, it does not refer to clinical psychosis, but to a personality dimension associated with tough-mindedness and antisocial tendencies.
The Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) was the earliest major operationalization of the model. It assessed Extraversion and Neuroticism and included a Lie scale for socially desirable responding.
The Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) refined the measurement of Extraversion and Neuroticism and became one of the most widely used personality questionnaires of its time. Two parallel forms were developed for repeated testing.
The Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory (JEPI) adapted the same structure for children and adolescents.
The introduction of Psychoticism expanded Eysenck's model from two major dimensions to the PEN framework: Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism.
The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) assesses the three PEN dimensions along with a Lie scale reflecting socially desirable or dissimulated responding.
Later revisions aimed to improve psychometric properties and clarify the structure of the scales.
The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised (EPQ-R, EPQ-RS) provides a refined version of the EPQ with improved item selection and scale balance.
The Junior EPQ-R (JEPQ-R, JEPQ-RS) developed by W. Corulla, extend the revised model to younger populations.
The EPQ represents the full PEN model and became a standard instrument in personality research for several decades.
Several specialized instruments were developed within or adjacent to the Eysenck framework.

The Impulsiveness Questionnaire (I7) distinguishes between Impulsiveness, Venturesomeness, and Empathy. It helped clarify the distinction between disinhibited impulsivity, socially adaptive risk-taking, and empathic concern within the broader Eysenck framework.
The Eysenck model was one of the first personality theories to explicitly link broad traits with biological mechanisms. It influenced later research on temperament, arousal, reinforcement sensitivity, and the neurobiological basis of personality.
Although contemporary personality research is dominated by broader trait models such as the Big Five, Eysenck's framework remains historically important. Extraversion and Neuroticism map closely onto modern trait structures, while Psychoticism overlaps with antagonism, impulsivity, and low agreeableness.
The associated questionnaires – from MPI to EPQ-R – form a coherent family of instruments reflecting the development of trait psychology from early dimensional models to more refined psychometric approaches.
