Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST), originally proposed by Jeffrey Gray, is a biologically oriented model of personality. It explains individual differences in behavior through sensitivity to reward, punishment, conflict, and threat.
Unlike descriptive trait models, RST focuses on neurobehavioral systems that regulate approach, avoidance, and defensive responses. It connects personality with motivation, emotion, and learning from reinforcement.
In the original formulation, RST distinguishes two main systems. The Behavioral Activation System (BAS) governs approach behavior in response to reward, while the Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) regulates sensitivity to punishment, uncertainty, and conflict.
The Carver and White's BIS/BAS Scales are the most widely used measure of the original BIS/BAS framework. They assess sensitivity to punishment and reward, with BAS typically divided into Drive, Reward Responsiveness, and Fun Seeking.
The Sensitivity to Punishment/Reward Questionnaire (SPSRQ, SPSRQ-C) assesses sensitivity to punishment and sensitivity to reward as two broad reinforcement-related dimensions. Compared with the BIS/BAS Scales, it places greater emphasis on behavioral tendencies and situational responses to reinforcement.
The Gray-Wilson Personality Questionnaire (GWPQ) is an earlier scenario-based measure of approach and avoidance tendencies. It is now used less often, but remains historically important in the development of reinforcement sensitivity assessment.
Later developments led to revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (rRST), which differentiates more clearly between anxiety, fear, and reward sensitivity. In rRST, BAS regulates approach toward reward. BIS is redefined as a conflict detection and resolution system linked to anxiety. The Fight–Flight–Freeze System (FFFS) governs responses to immediate threat and is more closely associated with fear.
This revision provides a more precise distinction between motivational approach, anxious conflict monitoring, and defensive reactions to aversive stimuli.
The RST Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ) is one of the most comprehensive rRST measures. It assesses BIS, FFFS, and four BAS-related components: Reward Interest, Goal-Drive Persistence, Reward Reactivity, and Impulsivity.
The Jackson-5 Scales of rRST assess revised BAS, revised BIS, Fight, Flight, and Freezing, providing a compact operationalization of the revised model.
The Reuter and Montag's rRST Questionnaire (rRST-Q) assesses core motivational systems within the revised RST framework, including BIS, BAS, and FFFS, with emphasis on their neurobehavioral interpretation.
Some instruments assess constructs closely related to reinforcement sensitivity rather than RST systems directly.
The Appetitive Motivation Scale (AMS) focuses more narrowly on approach motivation and reward sensitivity, linking reinforcement sensitivity with extraversion and functional impulsivity.
The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) developed by Cloninger assesses novelty seeking, harm avoidance, and reward dependence. Reinforcement sensitivity models occupy an intermediate position between personality, emotion, and motivation. BAS is associated with approach-related affect, positive emotionality, reward pursuit, and extraversion. BIS is linked to anxiety, vigilance, and sensitivity to conflict. Assessment of reinforcement sensitivity offers a biologically informed perspective on personality. Original RST measures focus mainly on sensitivity to reward and punishment, while rRST measures distinguish reward sensitivity, anxious conflict monitoring, and defensive fear responses more explicitly.
Together, these approaches help explain how individuals differ in responsiveness to reward, punishment, threat, and uncertainty, linking personality traits with emotional and behavioral regulation.
