Learning & Study: concept and assessment

Learning, cognition, and academic self-assessment describe how people approach learning, work with information, regulate study behavior, and perceive their academic abilities. This domain includes learning preferences, study strategies, metacognition, self-regulated learning, academic motivation, professional learning, research activity, academic stress, and student adaptation.

Some instruments in this section are based on research on self-regulated learning, metacognition, motivation, and student adjustment. Others – especially learning styles, sensory-channel models, hemispheric preferences, representational systems – are used mainly as reflective frameworks and should not be treated as strict evidence-based prescriptions.

This section focuses on general learning processes and higher education. School-specific measures are presented separately in the school learning section.

Learning styles, learning preferences, and popular cognitive-style models

These measures describe preferred ways of perceiving, processing, organizing, and using information in learning. Some instruments are based on educational or cognitive-style models, while others reflect popular frameworks such as sensory channels, hemispheric preferences, representational systems, or metaprograms.

The Kolb Learning Style Inventory assesses preferred modes of experiential learning, including concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. ©

The Learning Styles Questionnaire (LSQ) assesses learning styles derived from experiential learning theory, commonly described as activist, reflector, theorist, and pragmatist.

The Index of Learning Styles assesses preferences in the Felder-Silverman model, including active-reflective, sensing-intuitive, visual-verbal, and sequential-global dimensions.

The Style Analysis Survey (SAS) assesses learning style preferences in language learning, including sensory, social, cognitive, and task-orientation dimensions.


The following models are widely used in training, coaching, and self-development, but their categories should be treated as reflective frameworks rather than evidence-based prescriptions for learning.

The Your Style of Learning and Thinking Inventory (SOLAT) assesses preferred learning and thinking styles in terms of left-, right-, and integrated-brain orientation. Hemispheric dominance models are historically influential but scientifically oversimplified.

The Gregorc Style Delineator assesses preferred cognitive styles based on concrete-abstract perception and sequential-random ordering.

The Benziger Thinking Styles Assessment (BTSA) describes preferred modes of thinking and information processing through four brain-based styles: frontal left, basal left, basal right, and frontal right. ©

The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) assesses preferred thinking styles through four quadrants: analytical, practical, relational, and experimental thinking. ©

The Representational System Bias Test explores preferred sensory representational systems, such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and auditory-digital modes.

The VARK Questionnaire (VARK) assesses preferred learning modalities, including visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic preferences.

Study strategies and learning approaches

These measures assess how people organize learning, work with educational material, choose strategies, and approach academic tasks. They focus on ways of understanding, memorizing, structuring, repeating, planning, and applying information, as well as on deeper or more superficial approaches to study.

The Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) assesses deep, strategic, and surface approaches to learning.

The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) assesses deep and surface approaches to studying.

The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) assesses awareness and use of study strategies, including information processing, time management, and concentration.

The Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS) assess goal orientations in academic contexts, along with beliefs about ability, effort, and learning strategies.

Test-taking skills and test-wiseness

These measures assess skills involved in completing tests and exam tasks, especially tasks with multiple-choice formats.

The Test-Wiseness Test (TWT) assesses the ability to use test-taking cues and multiple-choice item features to identify correct answers independently of the content being tested.

Metacognition and self-regulated learning

These measures assess how learners plan, monitor, regulate, and evaluate their own cognitive and academic activity.

The State Metacognitive Inventory (SMI) assesses momentary awareness and regulation of thinking, including monitoring and control of cognitive processes.

The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) assesses knowledge about cognition and regulation of cognitive processes, including planning, monitoring, and evaluation.

The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) assesses motivational orientations and the use of cognitive, metacognitive, and resource-management strategies.

The Academic Self-Regulated Learning Scale (A-SRL-S) assesses self-regulation in academic contexts, including goal setting, persistence, and strategy use.

Student learning activity, motivation, and engagement

These measures assess how students participate in learning, what motivates them, and how actively they engage with academic tasks.

The Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) assesses intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation in educational contexts.

The Student Engagement Instrument (SEI) assesses cognitive and affective engagement with school.

The Study-Related Flow Inventory (WOLF-S) assesses flow experiences during study activities, including absorption, study enjoyment, and intrinsic motivation.

Academic self-beliefs and learning mindsets

These measures assess how learners understand their own abilities, intelligence, learning goals, and difficulties in education.

The Academic Self-Efficacy Scale assesses confidence in one's ability to perform academic tasks successfully.

The Academic Self-Concept Scale (ASCS) assesses perceived academic competence and self-evaluation in learning domains.

The Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale assesses beliefs about whether intelligence is fixed or malleable.

Professional learning and academic-career orientation

These measures assess motivation and orientation connected with professional education.

Research activity and academic development

These measures assess psychological resources and skills involved in advanced academic work.

Test anxiety and academic stress

These measures assess emotional responses to evaluation, exams, academic demands, and everyday student stressors.

The Achievement Anxiety Test assesses anxiety in achievement and evaluative situations, distinguishing between facilitating anxiety that may support performance and debilitating anxiety that interferes with it.

The Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) assesses anxiety in evaluative situations, including worry and emotional arousal.

The Westside Test Anxiety Scale assesses cognitive and physiological aspects of test anxiety and their impact on performance.

The Academic Stress Scale assesses perceived stress related to workload, expectations, and academic pressure.

The Multidimensional School Anger Inventory (MSAI-R) assesses adolescents' anger in school contexts, including affective, cognitive, and behavioral components of school-related anger.

Student well-being, academic adaptation, and study-group functioning

These measures assess student well-being, satisfaction with learning, adaptation to higher education, and functioning within the study group.

The Student Well-Being Process Questionnaire (Student WPQ) assesses student well-being, stressors, coping, psychological resources, and cognitive functioning in academic contexts.

The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) assesses students' adjustment to college, including academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and attachment to the institution.

Integration and interpretation

The study of learning integrates cognitive, motivational, and self-regulatory processes. No single construct – whether learning style, strategy use, or motivation – fully explains academic functioning.

Some instruments in this domain are well-supported by research on self-regulated learning and motivation. Others, particularly learning styles models, are more descriptive than predictive. Interpreting results requires attention to this distinction.

Used appropriately, these measures can support reflection on how individuals learn, how they approach academic tasks, and how they respond to challenges. They are best understood as tools for self-awareness and educational insight rather than definitive classifications of learning ability.
