Cognitive Intelligence: concept and assessment

Cognitive intelligence refers to the ability to reason, solve problems, learn from experience, and adapt to new situations. It is typically understood as a set of mental abilities involved in processing information, identifying patterns, making inferences, and applying knowledge.

In psychological research, cognitive intelligence is often described in terms of a general factor (g), reflecting shared variance across different cognitive tasks. More specific abilities – such as reasoning, working memory, verbal knowledge, spatial processing, and processing speed – also contribute to individual differences in performance.

Unlike social or emotional intelligence, cognitive intelligence is primarily assessed using performance-based tasks rather than self-report measures. These tasks require individuals to solve problems or complete structured exercises under standardized conditions.

General intelligence and broad cognitive ability

These instruments assess broad cognitive ability rather than a single narrow skill. They are used to estimate general intellectual functioning, reasoning ability, learning potential, and overall performance across different kinds of cognitive tasks.

The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, derived from the earlier Binet-Simon tradition, represent one of the foundational approaches to standardized intelligence assessment.

The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and related Wechsler batteries provide broad professional assessment of intellectual functioning, including verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. 💬 interview

Nonverbal, fluid, and culture-reduced reasoning

These instruments assess reasoning with abstract, visual, or minimally verbal material. They are often used to measure fluid reasoning, pattern detection, and problem solving while reducing the influence of vocabulary, schooling, or language background.

The Domino Test (D-48, D-70, D-55) assesses nonverbal reasoning through sequences and patterns based on domino-like visual stimuli.


Several popular or educational IQ tests also use nonverbal, matrix-like, or culture-fair reasoning tasks. They may be useful for practice, self-reflection, or informal exploration, but should not be interpreted as standardized professional intelligence tests.

The Eysenck IQ Tests are popular intelligence-test collections that include verbal, numerical, and nonverbal reasoning tasks intended for educational or self-assessment use.

The IQtest.dk is an online nonverbal intelligence test based on visual pattern reasoning and matrix-style tasks.

The Serebriakoff Advanced Culture Fair Test, developed by one of the founders of Mensa, offers a higher level of difficulty and focuses on advanced abstract reasoning.

Verbal ability and crystallized knowledge

These measures assess vocabulary, acquired knowledge, and language-based cognitive ability, reflecting aspects of crystallized intelligence.

The Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale assesses verbal knowledge and crystallized intelligence through vocabulary tasks, and has often been used alongside Raven's Progressive Matrices to contrast verbal/crystallized ability with nonverbal/fluid reasoning. © proprietary

Occupational, technical, and industrial aptitude

These measures assess cognitive and practical abilities relevant to vocational guidance, industrial work, technical tasks, and occupational selection.

The Flanagan Industrial Tests (FIT) are a set of short aptitude tests designed for industrial and occupational settings, assessing abilities such as arithmetic, assembly, components, mechanics, memory, patterns, planning, precision, scales, and tables. © proprietary

The Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT) assesses mechanical reasoning and the ability to understand practical relationships between physical forces, tools, and mechanical systems. It is primarily used in technical, vocational, and personnel-selection contexts and is closer to aptitude testing than to personality assessment.

Critical thinking and reasoning skills

These measures assess the ability to analyze arguments, evaluate evidence, recognize assumptions, draw conclusions, and apply reasoning to real-world problems.

The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) assesses critical thinking through tasks involving argument analysis, inference, interpretation, deduction, and evaluation of written information. © proprietary

The Halpern Critical Thinking Assessment (HCTA) assesses critical thinking through everyday scenarios and tasks involving verbal reasoning, argument analysis, hypothesis testing, likelihood and uncertainty, and decision making. © proprietary

The Cornell Critical Thinking Test assesses critical thinking in educational contexts, including induction, deduction, credibility, observation, assumptions, and meaning.

The Critical Thinking Skills Test by Lauren Starkey assesses practical critical thinking skills, including argument analysis, inference, evaluation of evidence, and everyday reasoning.

Multiple intelligences and popular intelligence typologies

These instruments describe intellectual strengths as profiles of different abilities, talents, or preferred ways of learning. They are useful for educational reflection and self-understanding, but they should not be interpreted as standard IQ tests or psychometric measures of general intelligence.

The Multiple Intelligences Test is based on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and describes strengths across areas such as linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic intelligence.

The Six Types of Intelligence Test, based on Jane Marie Stine's «The Language of Intelligence», describes preferred forms of intellectual expression and problem solving using six questionnaire-based profiles.

Integration and interpretation

Cognitive intelligence is best understood as a multidimensional system combining general ability and specific cognitive processes. Different instruments emphasize different aspects of this system, including abstract reasoning, verbal knowledge, working memory, processing speed, and executive efficiency.

Together, these measures provide a structured view of how individuals think, learn, and solve problems, complementing related domains such as emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and cognitive dispositions.
